This moth is called a snowberry clearwing (Hemaris diffinis). It is quickly becoming one of my favorite insects. I also saw one at our site in Mason a couple of weeks ago. They are beautiful moths that from afar look like hummingbirds. Up close, they mimic bumblebees and look a bit like panda bears in the face. What’s not to love? Their wings become clear as they get older due to the loss of scales from their intense flight patterns.
