This is a weevil called Cyphocleonus achates. They were released in parts of Michigan to control spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe). The female will lay her eggs in the root and when the larvae hatch they travel up the plant to feed on plant tissue. Part of my job is to survey for them throughout the state. They are by far the cutest weevil I have ever seen (and I have seen a lot of weevils). They have a large black “nose” (actually its mouth parts) that makes them look almost like a puppy. They are absolutely adorable.
